Planning for the Future of Eureka Union School District Schools

Planning for the Future of Eureka Union School District Schools

Eureka Union School District (EUSD) provides exemplary education programs for students in EUSD’s local elementary and junior high schools. Dedicated teachers and staff are committed to developing well-rounded, globally minded students and academically preparing them for high school, college and beyond. Quality schools that nurture successful students improve the standard of living in our community and protect the property value of local homes.

Aging Schools Require Repairs and Upgrades
The District is proud of the excellent academic performance in our neighborhood schools, but the quality and condition of the District’s school facilities have not kept pace. This year, EUSD is celebrating its 100th birthday. Although not all of our school buildings and facilities are 100 years old, all of the EUSD school sites are over 25 years old and require repairs and upgrades to support student safety and quality instruction.

While school maintenance staff do their best to keep schools safe and clean, our aging schools were built to safety and educational standards from a different era. Basic repairs and upgrades are needed to keep EUSD schools safe and functioning for our students.

Local Funding for School Improvements
While no decisions have been made at this time, the Eureka Union School District Board of Education is considering placing a $48 million school improvement bond measure on the November 2026 ballot to repair and upgrade local EUSD elementary and junior high schools. The bond measure, if approved, is projected to cost approximately $25 per $100,000 in assessed (not market) property value while bonds are outstanding. If approved by local voters, such a potential bond measure would:

  • Replace deteriorating and moldy carpets in classrooms
  • Repair leaky plumbing systems, electrical wiring, and leaky roofs
  • Upgrade old and deteriorating school HVAC systems to ensure classrooms are properly heated and cooled during cold and hot months
  • Improve student safety by updating fire alarms, security, and communications systems to bring schools up to modern safety and security standards
  • Help ensure all EUSD schools are accessible for students with disabilities

Mandatory Fiscal Accountability
A potential EUSD bond measure would require strict accountability provisions, including:
  • All bond funds must be used to repair and improve EUSD schools
  • No funds can be taken away by the State or be used for other purposes, including EUSD teachers’ or administrators’ salaries or pensions
  • A detailed project list showing how funds would be used will be part of the bond measure and provided to voters
  • Annual audits and an Independent Citizens’ Oversight Committee are required
