Planning for the Future of EUSD Schools

Eureka Union School District (EUSD) provides exemplary education programs for students in local elementary and junior high schools. Dedicated teachers and staff are committed to developing well-rounded, globally minded students and academically preparing them for high school, college, and beyond. Strong schools that nurture successful students improve the quality of life in our community and protect the property value of local homes.

Aging Schools Require Repairs and Upgrades
We are proud of the excellent academic performance in our neighborhood schools, but the quality and condition of the school facilities have not kept pace. EUSD is celebrating its 100th birthday this fall, and while not all of our school buildings and facilities are 100 years old, all of our schools are over 25 years old and need repairs and upgrades to support student safety and quality student instruction.

While school maintenance staff do their best to keep schools safe and clean, our schools were built to safety and educational standards from a different era. Basic repairs and upgrades are needed to keep EUSD schools safe and functioning for our students.

The District is in the process of assessing each school site and updating our Facilities Master Plan, which will outline priority repairs and upgrades for each of our school facilities. Needs and projects identified thus far include:

  • Replacing deteriorating and moldy carpets in classrooms
  • Repairing leaky plumbing systems, electrical wiring, and leaky roofs
  • Upgrading old and deteriorating school HVAC systems to ensure classrooms are properly heated and cooled during cold and hot months
  • Improving student safety by updating fire alarms, security, and communications systems to bring schools up to modern safety and security standards
  • Ensuring all schools are accessible for students with disabilities

Planning for the Future of Our Local Schools
The facility improvements needed in our neighborhood schools are far beyond the scope of EUSD’s current maintenance budget. District leaders are currently evaluating options for funding these improvements, including utilizing capital reserves in the EUSD budget and accessing state funds, which require matching funds usually provided by a local school improvement bond measure.

Many California school districts ask local voters to approve a school improvement bond measure to provide dedicated local funding for repairs and upgrades. Funding from a potential bond measure must be used to repair and improve EUSD schools and cannot be taken away by the state or used for other purposes. A bond measure would require a detailed project list showing how funds would be used, and an independent citizens’ oversight committee and annual audits to ensure funds are used as promised. If EUSD determines to move forward with a bond measure, additional information will be provided to the community.

Your Input Is Welcome
