Instructional Materials: All primary and supplemental instructional materials and assessments, including textbooks, teacher manuals, films, tapes, and software, will be compiled and stored by the classroom instructor and made available promptly for inspection by a parent in a reasonable time frame or in accordance with school district or county office policies or procedures. Education Code §§49091.10;51101

Observation: Upon written request, a parent has the right to observe instruction that involves his or her child or for the purpose of selecting a school in accordance with board policies on interdistrict and intradistrict transfers. Any observation will be done in accordance with policies established to ensure the safety of pupils and school personnel and to prevent undue interference with instruction or harassment of school personnel. Education Code §§49091.10(b);51101

Beliefs: A pupil may not be compelled to affirm or disavow any particular personally or privately held world view, religious doctrine, or political opinion. No pupil shall be relieved of any obligation to complete regular classroom assignments. Education Code § 49091.12(a)

Curriculum: The curriculum, including titles, descriptions, and instructional aims of every course offered by a public school, shall be compiled at least once annually in a prospectus. The prospectus is available for review upon request and for copying at a reasonable charge. Education Code §§ 49091.14; 49063

Animal Dissection: A pupil who has a moral objection to dissecting or otherwise harming or destroying animals as part of an instructional program, has the right to request an alternative educational program. Education Code §§ 32255-32255.6

Instruction on AIDS Prevention: The parents of pupils in grades 7 through 12 are entitled to written notice prior to AIDS prevention instruction being provided. Following the distribution of this notice, 10 to 15 days notice will be given when an outside organization or guest speaker that has not already been noticed, is scheduled to present AIDS prevention instruction. Parents may obtain from the school district or the county office copies of Education Code §§ 51201.5 and 51553 (AIDS Instruction)

Family Life and Sex Education: Whenever any parts of the instruction in health, family life education or sex education conflicts with religious training and beliefs or personal moral convictions of the parent or guardian, the student shall be excused from that part of the instruction upon written request. Education Code § 51240

Human Reproductive Instruction: You will be given written notice, and have the opportunity to prohibit your child's participation, in any instruction in which human reproductive organs and their functions and processes are described, illustrated, or discussed. Materials to be used may be reviewed at reasonable times and places prior to instruction. Education Code §51550

Minimum Days and Staff Development: Accessible from this website is the calendar for the school year which included the current schedule of any minimum days or pupil-free staff development days. A parent will be notified during the school year of any additional minimum days and pupil-free staff development days. Education Code § 48980(c)

Evaluations:  A pupil may not be tested for behavioral, mental, or emotional evaluation without the informed written consent of his or her parent. Education Code § 49091.12

Unexcused Absence:  Parents will be notified in a timely manner if their child is absent from school without permission.  Education Code §§ 44670.5; 51101

Pupil Discipline Rules:  A copy of the school's pupil discipline rules may be obtained by contacting the principal or his/her designee.  The parent or guardian of a pupil who has been suspended by a teacher may require to attend a portion of a school day in his or her child's class.  Education Code §§ 35291; 48900.1

Fingerprint Policy: Information concerning the school district's or the county office's pupil fingerprint policy, if any, is provided at the time of enrollment. Education Code § 32390

Confidential Medical Services: Pupils enrolled in grades 7 through 12 may be excused from school for the purpose of obtaining confidential medical services without the consent of the pupil's parent. Education Code § 46010.1

Pupil Immunization: The school district may administer immunizing agents to prevent or control communicable disease to pupils whose parents have consented in writing to such immunization. Education Code § 49403

A pupil may not be unconditionally admitted to school unless he/she has been fully immunized against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, rubella, Haemophilus influenza type b, and hepatitis B, in the manner and with immunizing agents approved by the State Department of Public Health, except that students who have reached the age of seven are exempt from the requirement of immunization against pertussis or mumps and age 4 years and 6 months for Haemophilus influenza type b. All children enrolling in kindergarten or below shall be immunized against hepatitis B. In addition, no pupil may be admitted or advanced to seventh grade that has not been immunized against hepatitis B. Except for children already admitted at the kindergarten level or above, as of July 1, 2001, every child must be immunized against chicken pox. Proof of immunization is required upon admission. This requirement does not apply to any person 18 years of age or older, or if a district-approved waiver form is signed stating that the immunization is contrary to the beliefs of the parent or guardian, or a letter or affidavit from a licensed physician is given stating that the physical condition of the pupil is such that immunization is not considered safe. If an outbreak of a communicable disease occurs at a school, the non-immunized student will be excluded for his/her own safety until such time as directed by health officials or the school district. Health and Safety Code § 120325

Physical Examinations: A child may be excluded from physical examination whenever the parents file a written statement with the school that they will not consent to a physical examination of their child. Whenever there is good reason to believe the child is suffering from a recognized contagious or infectious disease, the child will be excluded from school attendance. (School children are examined for vision, hearing, and curvature of the spine at selected grade levels) Education Code §§ 49451; 49452; 49452.5

State law requires that for each child enrolled in the first grade, the parent must present within 90 days after entrance, a certificate, signed by a physician, verifying that the child has received a physical examination within the last 18 months. A parent may file with the school district a written objection or waiver stating the reasons why he or she was unable to obtain such services. Health and Safety Code §§ 124085, 124105

Psychological Testing: A parent has the right to receive information about psychological testing the school does involving their child and to deny permission to give the test. Education Code § 51101

Pupil Medication: Any student who must take prescribed medication at school and who desires assistance of school personnel must submit a written statement of instruction from the physician and a statement by the parent indicating their desire to have the school assist in administering the physician's instructions. Education Code § 49423

Continuing Medication: A parent is required to inform the school if a pupil is on a continuing dedication regimen for a non-episodic condition of the medication being taken, the current dosage, and the name of the supervising physician. With a parent's consent, the school nurse or other designated employee may communicate with the physician with regard to the possible effects of the drug on the child's physical, intellectual and social behavior, as well as possible behavioral signs and symptoms of adverse side effects, omission, or over dosage. Education Code § 49480

Pupil Insurance: The school district or county office provide or make available medical or hospital services for injuries to students arising from school programs or activities. No student will be compelled to accept such services without his/her consent, or if a minor, without the consent of a parent or guardian. Pupil Safety: A parent has the right to have a safe and supportive learning environment for their child. Education Code § 51101

Tobacco-Free Campus: Check with the school office for the District policy, if any, regarding the prohibition against the use of tobacco products at any time on district property or in district buildings, or vehicles. Health and Safety Code § 104420

Accountability Report Card: A copy of the school district's accountability report card my be obtained from the school upon request. Education Code § 35256

Parent Meeting with Teacher and Principal: Upon reasonable notice, a parent has the right to meet with their child's teacher and principal. Education Code §51100

Parent Notification: A parent has the right to be notified concerning their child's classroom and standardized test performances, when their child has been identified as a risk of retention, and to be informed about school rules, attendance policies, dress codes, school visiting procedures and the person to contact should problems arise with their child. Education Code §48070.5, 51100

Academic Expectations: A parent has the right to be informed of the academic expectations of their child. Education Code §51101

High School Exit Exam: Commencing with the 2003-04 school year, each pupil completing the 12th grade will be required to pass the state high school exit exam as a condition of graduation. It is projected that the high school exit exam may first be taken by ninth grade students during the 2000-01 school year. Education Code § 60851

Review of Pupil Records: Parents have the right to question and receive an answer regarding items on their child's record that appear inaccurate, misleading, or that invades the child's privacy. Education Code § 51100

Notification of Privacy Rights of Pupils: Federal and state laws grant certain privacy rights and rights of access to pupil records to pupils and to their parents. Full access to all personally identifiable written records maintained by the school district or county office must be granted to: Parents of students age 17 or younger, Parents of students age 18 or older if the student is a dependent for tax purposes, Students age 16 or older, or having completed 10th grade.
Parents, or an eligible student, may review individual records by making a request to the principal. The principal will see that explanations and interpretations are provided if requested. A parent has the right to question and receive an answer regarding items on their child's record that appear inaccurate, misleading, or that invades the child's privacy. Information which is alleged to be inaccurate, inappropriate, or misleading may or may not be removed by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
In addition, parents of eligible students may receive a copy of any information in the pupil's records at a reasonable cost per page. School district policies and procedures relating to types of records, kinds of information retained, persons responsible for maintaining pupil records, directory information, access by other persons, review, and to the challenge to content of records is available though the principal or his/her designee. Parents may contact the school to review the log listing those who have requested or received information from a pupil's files, as required in Education Code § 49064. Access to a pupils' records will only be granted to those with a legitimate educational interest.
When a student moves to a new school district, records will be forwarded upon request of the new district. At the time of transfer, the parent or an eligible student may challenge, review or receive a copy at reasonable fee of the requested records. Parents may contact the school district or county office for any policy regarding the review and expungement of pupil records.
If you believe the school district is not in compliance with federal regulation regarding privacy, you may file a complaint with the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.
The school district also makes certain student directory information available in accordance with state and federal laws. This means that each student's name, birth date, birthplace, address, telephone number, major course of study, participation in school activities, dates of attendance, awards, and the most previous public or private school attendance, may be released to certain specified agencies. In addition, height and weight of athletes may be made available. Appropriate directory information may not be provided to any private, profit making entity other than employers, prospective employers or to representatives of the news media. Names and addresses of seniors or terminating students my be given to public or private schools and colleges.
Upon written request from the parent of a student age 17 or younger, the school district will withhold directory information about the student. If the student is 18 or older or enrolled in an institution of post-secondary instruction and makes a written request, the pupils request to deny access to directory information will be honored. Request should be submitted within 30 calendar days of receipt of this notification. Education Code §49060-49078, 51101

Specific School Request: Parents have the right to request a specific school and to receive a response from the school district. Such a request does not obligate the school to grant the request. Education Code § 51101

Absence for Religious Exercises: Permissive absence may be granted for governing board approved religious exercises or instruction. Education Code § 46014

Absences for Personal Reasons: A pupil may be excused from school for justifiable personal reasons, including but not limited to an appearance in court, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at an employment conference, when the pupil's absence has been requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or a designated representative. A pupil absent from school under this section will be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence which can be reasonably provided and, upon satisfactory completion within a reasonable period of time, will be given full credit therefore. The teacher of any class from which a pupil is absent will determine what tests and assignments the pupil will make up. The tests and assignments will be reasonably equivalent to those missed during the absence. Education Code § 48205

Excused Absences: No pupil will have his/her grade reduced or suffer a loss of academic credit on account of an excused absence when missed assignments and tests that can reasonably be provided are satisfactorily completed within a reasonable period of time. An excused absence defined in Education Code § 48205 as:

(a.) Notwithstanding Section 48200, a pupil shall be excused from school when the absence is:
- Due to quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer.
- For the purpose of having medical, dental, optometric, or chiropractic service rendered.
- For the purpose of attending the funeral services of a member of his or her immediate family, so long as the absence is not more than one day if the service is conducted in California and not more than three days if the service is conducted outside of California.
- For the purpose of jury duty in the manner provided for by law.
- Due to the illness or medical appointment during school hours of a child of whom the pupil is the custodial parent.
- For justifiable personal reasons, including, but not limited to, an appearance in court, attendance at a funeral service, observance of a holiday or ceremony of his or her religion, attendance at religious retreats or attendance at employment conferences, when the pupil's absence has been requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or designated representative pursuant to uniform standards established by the governing board.

(b.) A pupil absent from school under this section shall be allowed to complete all assignments and tests missed during the absence that can be reasonably provided and, upon satisfactory completion within a reasonable period of time, shall be given full credit therefore. As the teacher of any class from which a pupil is absent shall determine the tests and assignments shall be reasonably equivalent to, but not necessarily identical to, the tests and assignments that the pupil missed during the absence.

(c.) For purposes of this section, attendance at religious retreats shall not exceed four hours per semester.

(d.) Absences pursuant to this section are deemed to be absences in computing average daily attendance and shall not generate state appointment payments.

(e.) "Immediate family" as used in this section, has the same meaning as that set forth in Section 45194, except that references therein to "employee" shall be deemed to be references to "pupil".

Home Instruction: Except for pupils receiving individual instruction provided pursuant to a school district or county office-sponsored programs a pupil with a temporary disability which makes attendance in the regular day classes or alternative education program in which the pupil is enrolled impossible or inadvisable shall receive individual instruction provided by the school district in which the pupil is deemed to reside. Education Code § 48206.3

Residence When Hospitalized: Notwithstanding compulsory education requirements, a pupil with a temporary disability who is in a hospital or other residential health facility, excluding a state hospital, which is located outside of the school district in which the pupil's parent or guardian resides shall be deemed to have complied with the residency requirements for school attendance in the school district in which the hospital is located. It shall be the primary responsibility of the parent of a pupil with temporary disability to notify the school district in which the pupil is deemed to reside of the pupil's presence in a qualifying hospital. Education Code §48207, 48208

Interdistrict Attendance Agreements: A pupil may attend a school in a district other than the pupil's district of residence pursuant to an interdistrict attendance agreement. Contact the school for an interdistrict application. Education Code §46600, 48209, et seq.

Residence Based on Parent Employment: Under certain conditions, a pupil may attend schools of the district within which one or more of the parents are employed. Contact the school district in which the parents are employed for further information. Education Code § 48209

Attendance Areas: A pupil may attend a school in a district other than the pupil's district of residence pursuant to an interdistrict agreement. The school district has adopted a policy for interdistrict and intradistrict attendance. A copy of the application and the notice prepared by the State Department of Education is available from the district office. Education Code § 44660, 48209, et seq.

Internet Policy: In the instance where a school district or county office provides pupils with access to the Internet or an on-line service, the policy regarding access by pupils to the Internet and on-line sites will be distributed at the start of the school year. Education Code § 48980(i), 51870.5

Participation in Advisory Councils: A parent has the right to participate as a member of a school site council, a parental advisory council, or a site-based management leadership team in accordance with the rules governing parent membership of those organizations. Education Code § 51101

Volunteering Time and Resources: Parents may volunteer their time and resources for the improvement of school facilities and programs under the supervision of district employees. A school plan is available to parents that describes opportunities to participate in professional development. Education Code § 511.1; 44670.5

Pupils with Exceptional Needs: The school district is included in the Placer-Nevada County Special Education Local Plan Area (SELPA). Pupils with exceptional needs, as defined by Education Code § 56026, have a right to a free and appropriate public education. Alternative Schools: California state law authorizes all school districts to provide for alternative schools. Section 58500 of the Education Code defines alternative schools as a school or separate class group within a school, which is operated in a manner designed to:

a. Maximize the opportunity for students to develop the positive values of self-reliance, initiative, kindness, spontaneity, resourcefulness, courage, creativity, responsibility, and joy.

b. Recognize that the best learning takes place when the student learns because of his or her desire to learn.

c. Maintain a learning situation maximizing student self-motivation and encouraging the student in his own time to follow his own interests. These interests may result wholly or in part from a presentation by his teachers or choices of learning projects.

d. Maximizing the opportunity for teachers, parents and students to cooperatively develop the learning process and its subject matter. The opportunity shall be a continuous, permanent process.

e. Maximize the opportunity for students, teachers and parents to continuously react to the changing world, including but not limited to the community in which the school is located.

In the event a parent, pupil, or teacher is interested in further information concerning alternative schools, the county superintendent of schools, the school district, and the principal's office have copies of the law available for your information. Free or Reduced Price Meals: Needy pupils are entitled to free or reduced price meals. Contact the school for eligibility information. Education Code § 49510, et seq.

Personal Property: The district or the county offices are not responsible for personal property. Students are discouraged from bringing non-instructional items to school.

Parent Responsibility: Parents are liable for all damages caused by the willful misconduct of their minor children that results in the death or injury to other students, school personnel or school property. Education Code § 48904; Civil Code § 1714.1

Parent Complaint Procedure: Federal law requires the school district and county office to adopt and notify parents and guardians of the District's complaint procedures for state and federal educational programs, including the opportunity to appeal to the state department. The Act requires the school district to investigate and seek to resolve complaints at the local level and to follow uniform complaint procedures pursuant to state regulations when addressing complaints alleging unlawful discrimination for failure to comply with the law in adult basic education, consolidated categorical aid programs, migrant education, vocational education, child care and development programs, child nutrition programs and special education programs.
The Governing Board has adopted a complaint procedure for programs and services covered by this act and a compliance officer has been appointed to process claims, investigate, and ensure compliance with the law. The Uniform Complaint Procedure procedure may be viewed on this web site.

Individuals with Disabilities: In accordance with federal and state laws, the school district will not discriminate against an individual with disabilities as far as involvement in programs and activities and in the use of facilities. If your child needs special accommodations, please contact the school or the county office.

Nondiscrimination: The school district has a policy of nondiscrimination on the basis of sex. This policy applies to all students insofar as participation in programs and activities is concerned, with few exceptions, such as contact sports, in accordance with federal law. Complaints alleging noncompliance with this policy should be directed to the school principal or the county office. Appeals may be made to the district superintendent.

Asbestos Management Plan: The school district has a current management plan for asbestos containing materials for all district portables. The plan is available for inspection at the office of the superintendent during normal business hours.
